When working in community-based conservation projects, one often encounters a shortage of educational films that speak to local people about the conservation challenges they face. Often, internationally-made documentary films are in English, and from an outsider’s point-of-view. Having lived and worked in Central Africa since 2003, I have developed an understanding of the insider’s perspective on conservation. This enables me to successfully collaborate with the community while working on a film, and to create a finished product that links their perspective with that of conservation. One key result of working collaboratively with local communities to create films that are about their own experience of conservation issues is that in the process of becoming more informed about the film’s topic, they also have an opportunity to become advocates for preserving resources.
